A New Meaning to Whisky with Water as Floods Hit Glengoyne Distillery

Edinburgh, 19 August 2004: Glengoyne Distillery in Dumgoyne by Killearn also fell foul of the freak weather conditions yesterday when the Blairgar burn, which provides water to the distillery, burst its banks and a flash flood descended upon the picturesque site.
Around 90 visitors were trapped inside the distillery buildings whilst they waited for the water to subside enough to allow them back to their vehicles. The distillery staff were on hand to reassure their guests and make them as comfortable as possible, providing food and refreshments.
Distillery Manager, Robbie Hughes, said: "It was unbelievable. The heavy rain started at about lunchtime and just didn't let up. At about 3pm, water just descended on us, bringing with it rocks and logs and other debris and a fast flowing river ran through our courtyard.
"Luckily nobody was hurt and we kept all our visitors inside the buildings until it was safe enough for them to leave. The water was still quite deep so we used the Glengoyne Land Rover to transport them back to their vehicles and away to safety."
Some of the warehouses were also flooded and today distillery workers were out checking the casks to assess the damage. The site has now been cleared of all debris and has been made safe for visitors. The visitor centre is open for business and whisky production will continue as normal.
