HMS Glasgow Bids Farewell
On Wednesday 13th October Glengoyne Distillery was delighted to welcome sailors from HMS Glasgow who were in the City of Glasgow before the warship set off on its final voyage to Porstmouth for decommissioning at the end of January.
Week long celebrations to mark Glasgow's vital contribution to UK defence were launched with the arrival of HMS Glasgow in her home town on Monday 11th October 2004. The warship has been affiliated to the city ever since her launch in 1976.
Many of the crew managed to find time to visit Glengoyne Distillery and enjoy a guided tour and whisky tasting. The sailors very kindly gave Glengoyne some interesting gifts from the warship including, a Union Jack standard flag which was worn as a Jack at the bow of HMS Glasgow, a shell casing from one of the last shells ever to be fired from the warship and a plaque with the emblem of HMS Glasgow. At the end of the tour each sailor was given a bottle of Glengoyne 21 year old Single Highland Malt Scotch whisky to mark his or her visit to Glengoyne Disitllery.
HMS Glasgow sailed for the last time ever from Yorkhill Quay on Monday 18th October 2004 flying her 65-metre-long paying off pennant (it is customary for a ship entering harbour for the last time to fly this flag in place of her masthead pennant). Once the ship arrives in Portsmouth she will begin preparations for decommissioning this year.
